Product Description

G7.  This is an 1/2kg pack of this beautiful sweet  shallot. This is a French variety as suggested by its name, one of the most renowned in the world. They can be sown in Spring for the same year and in Autumn for a harvest the following year.  Unlike onion sets where you plant a set and get an onion, shallots multiply so are really good value.

    Bretagne onions

2022 was a bad year and these shallots were grown then. This year, having had 13000 liters of heaven sent water in stock to start the season I have only 3000 liters left and, even so, these shallots have struggled. Nevertheless, I have tried to help them along and the few new bulbs which have grown to any sort of size, will be helped to grow bigger in time for harvest. May be time to consider, after ?10? years of this variety, an alternative as the seasons warm up.

They arrived and were put in the garden. Looked good quality, firm bulbs. Have seen growth this week and will be looking forward to seeing them get bigger. Have had success with seeds of italy items previously and am eagerly awaiting the Same with the shallots

    Shallots 'Longue de Bretagne'

This variety is the best and most prolific I grow here on the West Coast of Scotland. Perhaps I plant earlier than most - early November. They overwinter just fine in the polytunnel, remaining firm and putting up lots of strong green shoots. This bodes well for the plentiful number of bulbs to harvest from a single parent! I give a nitrogen feed, ( weak manure tea! ) every two to three weeks from planting.
