Product Description
These crunchy, upright lettuces are the mainstay of summer salads in Rome. They are the hallmark of Caesar Salad', invented by the Italian-American Cesare Cardini, with its creamy trademark dressing made with egg yolk, vinegar and parmesan cheese. Crisp and full of flavour, they are expensive lettuces to buy in the shops – a great reason for growing your own! No garden or kitchen should be without them. In Rome it is sown either side of June – the hottest month in the city. When not in Rome check out the sowing instructions below.
Annual: Sow between spring and late summer in modules in seed compost, thin to one plant per module and plant out when large enough to handle. Alternatively sow thinly in a row outside (a drill) directly into well-prepared fertile ground about 1–2 cm deep. Thin if they come up too close, and eat the thinnings.
