Buccellati are a type of traditional Sicilian dessert, originating from the city of Caltanissetta. These are biscuits prepared with shortcrust pastry or puff pastry, filled with jam, honey, dried fruit and chocolate, and often decorated with icing sugar or coloured granulated sugar. Sicilian buccellati, also called buccellatini, are a small version of the classic buccellato that is prepared for the Immaculate Conception and in general during the Christmas period in particular, although they are now found in Sicilian bakeries all year round. If we are lovers of Sicilian cuisine and are looking for a sweet, these biscuits are right for us. They are usually decorated with icing and coloured sprinkles although they are now found in bakeries also in a simpler version with only chopped pistachios to decorate the pastry. However you decorate them they will always be a hit. Sicilian buccellati are very popular and appreciated throughout Italy.
