Benevento, the main town of the ancient Sannio region, claims to have been the first to invent it. According to another tradition, Latin authors Livy and Martial documented in their writings the existence of nougat in that area, under the name of “cupedia” and the Moors invented the Spanish version we know as Turron in Spain 500 years ago.

Whoever invented this sweet treat made with egg white, sugar and almonds essentially with rice paper down each side, it is a wonderful treat to have at Christmas (or anytime!) but is only really available at this time of year.
