A traditional Italian sweet for Christmas, made in Cremona by Vergani who have been been producing torrone using traditional methods since 1881.
According to legend, torrone was first made in 1441 for the marriage of Francesco Sforza and Bianca Maria Visconti. The bride and groom were offered a sweet made with honey, almonds and egg white, in the form of Torrazzo or “torrione”, the thirteenth century tower of Cremona cathedral. Hence the Italian word for nougat “Torrone” , would seem to take its name.
By the 19th century there were many shops in Cremona making nougat by hand and it was here that Secondo Vergani first worked in Porta Venezia. In 1881 he acquired the shop he was working in and devoted himself to the production of nougat, and so Vergani began.
This tasty Nougat candy obtained through dehydration of syrups and honey, emulsified with egg white, afterwards mixed with flavorings and almond.The recipe is obtained by roasting dried fruit, while the secret of its deliciunes lies in the meringue paste, with the addition of almonds. Perfect at the end of a meal, during family lunches or dinners, to accompany a fresh homemade liqueur, it can be an excellent snack, crunchy and irresistible, for a quick and tasty break.
