The leaves, which resemble olive leaves (hence the Italian name), have the strength and flavour of wild rocket and the meatiness of cultivated! Rocket is used in every region of Italy and across the Mediterranean and is now really popular in the U.K. It brings a peppery bite to salads, a real freshness when sprinkled on to cooked pizzas and is delicious with slices of orange. Try Pesto di Rucola (arugula pesto) made of whizzed-up rocket, walnuts or pine nuts, parmesan, garlic, a pinch of salt and lashings of olive oil on bruschetta or served with pasta.
Annual: Sow 0.5cm deep, at any time between March to September straight into weeded, well dug, fertile soil. Grow a pot or window box if you havent a garden. Its one of the easiest plants to grow, is ready in 4 to 6 weeks (as it rockets up) and is a cut and come again plant.
